At last, it is summer. Well at least close to summer. I started packing up our pool bag so it’s ready at a moments notice. Towels, new swimsuits, new goggles, and most importantly…sunscreen! I was thrilled when Block Island Organics asked if I would be interested in trying out their suncare products. First of all, they’re a local Rhode Island company, and second, it’s organic. I have been looking for a sunscreen that is organic and that I actually like. Just thinking of all the chemicals (most notably retinyl palmitate & oxybenzone) that are in traditional sunscreens scares me. Especially seeing that I am lathering up my kids in these products.
Block Island Organics sent me a large bottle of SPF15 sunscreen along with some sample packets.
“An organic lightweight, non-nano and instantly absorbing mineral based sunscreen safe for sensitive skin. Provides hours of all natural, highly effective broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection. As with all of our sunscreens, a small amount goes a long way. For best absorption, start with a small amount of product and add more as you need it.”
We had our first pool day and I lathered my boys up before we left. The first thing I noticed was how truly lightweight it is. It’s not heavy or greasy, and a small amount actually did go a long way. Being a mineral based sunscreen I expected it to smell awful, but I was surprised. I’m very sensitive when it comes to smells of lotions and cosmetics, but this was not overbearing.
I reapplied the sunscreen every couple of hours. Usually I use a 30SPF or higher on my white little Irish boys, but the 15SPF held up nicely with no burns. I’ll be keeping this SPF15 for myself and purchasing a higher spectrum for my boys.
Other great points aside from being lightweight, not stinky, and good perfomance…this product is a vegan formula and paraben free. There are no artificial fragrances and they don’t test on animals. These are important to me. I know that some people shy away from organic products due to cost, but honestly this bottle is maybe another $10 more and as I said, a small amount goes a long way, so it will last. You can feel good knowing what you’re actually rubbing all over your body.

Overall, I give it a thumbs up!
I was given a free sample of this product to facilitate this review, but my thoughts and opinions on this product are my own.
I HAVE to check this sunblock out!! I learned on Sunday that I am a sunblock psychopath (meaning, I reapply it to my nearly transparent blondie almost constantly), so I really need something that is chemical free!! Thanks for the review!
I LOVE BIO! It’s so perfect for our whole family!
Thankfully my kids have inherited their dad’s tendency to tan over burn. I on the other hand burn, peel, and repeat. So I don’t leave home without sunscreen in my bag.
