The boys just finished their first year in Cub Scouts. It was a great journey and they all want to continue on next year. I think Scouts was a really great fit for them. They love the outdoors and enjoyed meeting new friends. What I personally loved about it was that it taught them more about community, God, and gave them a sense of duty to both.
They earned a ton of badges and belt loops this year. They learned about cooking, astronomy, growing food, nature, building things, movie making, swim safety, knot-tying, and so many other things.
They had adventures like Scouting for Food, Caroling at the nursing home, hiking the wildlife refugee, and visiting the police and fire stations.
One of the highlights of the year was the Pinewood Derby. They were waiting since day one for that event. Although we did learn a lesson and we’ll be ready for next year. Our weights on the bottom didn’t have enough clearance so on the day of the race we had to put on them on the top. The kids were not too thrilled about ruining their super cool paint jobs, but we needed to do what we needed to do.
Two of them even made it into the local Reporter. They now think they’re famous.
Overall it was a really great experience for our whole family and we look forward to a few scout adventures throughout the summer.
