Fitness Friday: Changing Things Up and Thigh Gaps

Welcome back!! It’s a New Year, and I know it’s totally cliche, but I’m getting back on the wagon! I was quite derailed in the fitness department throughout 2017, and you know what, I was miserable. When I don’t fit in my workouts I’m not happy. I don’t feel good about myself both mentally and physically and then it all just spirals. So I’m back to trying new workouts. I even did something a little crazy….I joined a gym! I haven’t belonged to a gym since 2004. My treadmill dying last year was my big push in this decision. I fell off the wagon due to not having a treadmill in winter (one of a zillion lame excuses I could give you).

So my husband and I have been working out, which is nice. It’s like “morning dates.” I head in there and do some cardio and then I go into the Women Only room to do weights, planks, and stretching. I don’t need some meatheads checking out my boney lack of ass while I’m contorting myself into compromising positions.

The Women Only room has three treadmills, a few ellipticals, free weights, and six weight machines. I think it’s great that they offer a room just for women to feel comfortable working out. I figured I would work on legs Monday morning. As I’m looking around the room I notice there are only TWO leg machines. That’s it. Then it dawns on me that the two machines available in the Women Only room only target thigh gap. Seriously!!? WTF. If you’re not familiar with what the “thigh gap” is, here you go.

From Wikipedia

“A thigh gap is a space between the inner thighs of some women when standing upright with knees touching. A thigh gap has become an aspect of physical attractiveness that has been associated with fragility and femininity. In the United States, it has been reported that among teenage girls, a gap has become a beauty ideal.”
This is the “beauty ideal?” So now the Women Only workout room is on trend. Apparently women don’t need to work on quads, calves, or hamstrings. We just need to make sure we tighten that inner thigh so we have a nice gap. Sad that this is what our teens are seeking as their beauty ideal.
Oh well. Win some, lose some. I’ll just toss in some squats. So what are some of your fitness goals for 2018? I would love to hear them…even if they are “getting a thigh gap.”
