We hit the “spring” book fair again a couple of weeks ago and the boys really wanted the Wings of Fire first graphic novel. Graphic novel, I asked. Really? They insisted and how can I say no when my kid asks for a book? I can’t.
Author of the Wings of Fire series, Tui T. Sutherland, came out with this first graphic novel edition adaptation with illustrator Mike Holmes. Now my boys love EVERYTHING dragon related but they have never read the original series of books. They just really, really wanted this graphic novel. I tried convincing them to just get the first regular book, but it didn’t work. I made my oldest PROMISE that he was going to read it, every word. Not like those Star Wars and Ninjago comic-type books they never end up reading, they just look at the pictures. He promised and started reading as soon as we got home. He skipped watching TV with his brothers and read the book instead. He finished it the next day after school. I then got a text “Can you get me the book 2 graphic novel. I finished this one.” A thousand times YES!!!! My boy was excited about reading. Much to our disappointment, book 2 isn’t out yet.
He said it was fast-paced and full of action….and “the dragons are awesome.”
The basics of the story.
“Clay has grown up under the mountain, chosen along with four other dragonets to fulfill a mysterious prophecy and end the war between the dragon tribes of Pyrrhia. He’s not so sure about the prophecy part, but Clay can’t imagine not living with the other dragonets; they’re his best friends.
So when one of the dragonets is threatened, all five spring into action. Together, they will choose freedom over fate, leave the mountain, and fulfill their destiny — on their own terms.”
Apparently he loved this book so much he started reading it a second time last night to his brothers. Therefore, it gets the two thumbs up in our house.
Now I would just really appreciate if he would stop asking me WHEN is the next book coming out.
