His First Concert

I think one’s first concert is like a right of passage. I mean, who doesn’t remember their first concert? Mine was New Kids on the Block with Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch as the opening act. I think I was 12, and Mark Wahlberg dropped down to his boxer shorts! Eek. I remember the energy. The lights. Everyone singing along. It was a lot of excitement for my 12 year old self.

I came home from work one day  a few months ago and found my 12 year old jamming in the kitchen to the Dropkick Murphys station on Pandora. He LOVES it. It kind of caught me by surprise because he’s sort of coming into his own. This tween is finding his own likes and dislikes. My heart ached a little bit. When my husband and I found out that Dropkicks and Flogging Molly were coming to a new outdoor music venue here in Rhode Island we thought it would be PERFECT for his first concert. Just the three of us.

Well, we had a blast. He LOVED it! It was a perfect summer night out by the water. He got right up there and was singing along and dancing around. He kept turning to me, “I know this one!”, “I love this song!” My husband and I stood there in awe. Our baby boy!!

If you’re local and get a chance to go to Bold Point Park for a concert this summer, I highly recommend it. The view is amazing and the staff was great (I may have even gotten asked to see my 21+ bracelet). Just make sure you bring chairs or blankets, it’s general admission only.

  1. Marky Mark! My first concert was far less cool – an obscure group called The Nylons performed at the local college. I was about 12, I guess.

I haven’t taken my girls to a concert yet, but one has been to a music festival. There’s a narrow window of time in which a kid and parent can like the same music, and the kid isn’t too cool to take it in with mom or pops!

I think your window will be open longer than most, ms. Just Got Carded!
